Happy Daze: Free Fallin’

0

Each day, more and more orange leaves coat the sidewalks, the air gets crisper in the morning, and the grass becomes dewier – the fundamental signs that fall is approaching. The excitement that comes along with entering a new time of the year can easily be channeled into seasonal self-care activities. Practicing self-care has proven to improve physical health, emotional health, and create a soothing feeling.

So what autumn activities can be turned into personal care? One of the most popular reminders of this time of year are pumpkins. Painting pumpkins with inspirational quotes, reinforcing positive attitudes, is one idea. Another great use of the signature fall fruit is baking pumpkin bread. Also, before eating the pumpkin bread, making and eating a warm stew or crockpot dish can boost your spirit and put you into a fall mood. Decorating homemade cookies with leaves or halloween creatures can be a yummy and fun way to let off some steam, too.

Emma Zupan ‘22 enjoys going for walks, especially when the leaves begin to turn. Another way she takes time to care for herself during the fall season is by lighting autumn-scented candles and watching her favorite shows. She’s also festive by decorating her house and breaking out her oversized sweatshirts for the cool weather. Another activity Emma takes part in is attending the Farmer’s Market on Fridays in Canton Village Green.

Aseman Bagheri ‘22 also participates in special self care festivities during the fall. With the members of her house, she enjoys cooking seasonal food on Fridays. Aseman also heads to the Bagelry occasionally for a matcha latte. In addition to these activities, Aseman stays cozy in the changing weather by binge watching Netflix with her partner.

Another activity idea to combat the cool is sitting by a fire. Whether at a fire pit, such as the new ones introduced to the townhouses, or fireplace, like the one at the bookstore, gathering around one will be sure to warm you up. Roasting hot dogs or marshmallows will make it even better! Breaking out your sweaters and comfy sweats will also keep you warm while simultaneously promoting hygge, the art of being comfortable, and with feelings of wellness and contentment. If you find that you don’t have many fall-inspired clothes, it can also be nice to allow yourself to participate in some retail therapy and buy a new autumn set. Putting away summer clothes can also help to declutter and improve your mood.

As schoolwork starts to pick up while we get deeper into the semester, it’s important to care for your mind. Brainstorming and then completing some fall-themed self care activities can be a good incentive to combat depression, anxiety and stress!
