Star Wars “The Mandalorian” Series Review
Disney’s “Star Wars” series, “The Mandalorian,” had its season three debut on Wednesday, and the world’s favorite sci-fi dad is back to having more adventures with his precious little friend. In this season Din Djarin (played by Pedro Pascal) and his companion Grogu, known to many as baby Yoda, are off to regain Din’s honor following the event that took place in “The Book of Boba Fett” series. During that series, which takes place during the same time as “The Mandalorian,” Din reveals to his cult leader known as “The Armorer” (played by Emily Swallow) that he had removed his helmet in order to save Grogu. Because of this, he is disbanded from his order, and the only way to redeem himself is to find the living waters beneath the mines of Mandalore. This will be a difficult task for Din, due to the current state of the planet. In the same series, we learn that the galactic empire besieged the planet known as the Purge, and in an event called “The Night of a Thousand Tears,” most of the planet and the population was destroyed in a fire-bombing campaign. In this episode, we learn how Din plans to accomplish this and whom he wants to bring along. However, he must go on at least one more quest in order to begin his journey to the dead, poisoned world of Mandalore.
Confronting this challenge for Din and Grogu likely lead to their story intersecting with a popular returning character in Bo-Katan Kryze (played by Katee Sackhoff). After helping one another last season, the relationship between Din and Bo has soured due to Din rightfully gaining possession of the infamous Dark Saber after his duel with Moff Gideon in the final episode of season two. Due to winning the saber in a duel, Bo simply cannot take the saber from him. It must be won in combat. Anyone who is familiar with this character’s history going back to the two animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels,” knows the tragic character arc that has befallen her. Din goes to visit Bo-Katan and finds that she is alone as her allies are scattered across the galaxy thanks to Din’s acquisition of the Dark Saber. She is the leader of essentially dead people. Her soured relationship with Din will be perhaps the most pivotal plot point this season.
Another character returning for season three is Carl Weathers’ character Greff Karga, leader of the Bounty Hunters’ Guild and friend to Din. In the first episode, we learn that he’s now a magistrate for a trading port that was once riddled with crime. Karga seems to have begun his redemption arc by doing the right things, thanks to his encounters with Din and Grogu. We see an example of this when pirates come to the trading port and start harassing Karga.
Another character confirmed to return, as mentioned earlier, is Moff Gideon (played by Giancarlo Esposito), after his capture in the season two finale. On the more comedic side of the show, mechanic Peli Motto (played by comedian Amy Sedaris) is also set to return. She and her droids on Tatooine have helped Din and Grogu in the past. We will also see the return of a minor, but critical character, Dr. Perishing, who was the doctor behind the experiments on Grogu while he was an Imperial captive.
One point of contention the series will have to deal with is the omission of the character Cara Dune. The former rebel shock trooper and newly appointed New Republic Marshal is seemingly no longer going to be a part of the series. Despite becoming a fan-favorite character, the firing of
controversial actress Gina Carano over multiple abhorrent social media posts left many fans angry at Disney. Some of Carano’s co-stars would express their disappointment and defend her, such as Pascal and Bill Burr. While others and I are disgusted by the hate and ignorance within Carano, her firing has led to the loss of a beloved character within the “Star Wars” community. Cara Dune was an awesome warrior who became characterized as a rougher, tougher version of Princess Leia. In the first episode, we learn that because of her arrest of Moff Gideon, she was promoted within the High Republic. Whether this will be further expanded on remains to be seen.
A space battle, pirates, a giant monster, and a new quest begin showing signs for a fantastic third season of “The Mandalorian.” After the divisive response to “The Book of Boba Fett” series, Disney is looking for season three to recapture the same magic as it did in previous seasons. Season two, which was especially emotional for fans, included events such as the live action debut of fan favorite character Ahsoka Tano and the return of the beloved Luke Skywalker in the finale episode.
With many “Star Wars” projects getting canceled or delayed by Disney as well as no new movies being announced, many “Star Wars” fans have been anxiously waiting for the third season of the most popular show in the streaming world. The series will release seven more episodes every Wednesday until April 19. Season four of the series has also been confirmed and is currently in development.
