SLU Spring Sports Update

The St. Lawrence spring sports teams have all begun their seasons and have gotten off to some great starts.

The Men’s Lacrosse team has had an outstanding first ten games of their season, going 9-1 and currently being ranked as the number 8 Division III lacrosse team in the country. They won their first six games of the season, all by a margin of five goals or more, before losing to Union. After their one loss, they won their next three games, most recently beating Plattsburgh State 19-4. Judge Murphy has led the team in scoring with 23 goals and 17 assists, totaling an impressive 40 points in 10 games, with Mark Maloney in second with 17 goals and 22 assists for a total of 39 points.  

The Women’s Lacrosse team has gotten off to a 3-5 start and is currently ranked as the twenty-fifth-best team in the nation. They beat SUNY Geneseo, Rochester, and Stevenson earlier in the season, and in their most recent game, they lost to Trinity by a score of 14-6. Charlotte Powell has led the team in points with 15 goals and four assists, while Jacqui Cloutier has had 12 goals and five assists for the second-most points for the Saints. 

The Softball team currently is 3-11 but has won three of their last four games and their past two games in a row. They beat Keuka College on March 24, and beat SUNY Potsdam twice in a row at an April 4 doubleheader. Stella VanGee has had a .381 batting average with 16 hits and four RBIs for the Saints, and Jacee Casebolt has had a 1.95 ERA pitching for the Saints. 

The Baseball team has started off with a 5-7 record this season. They recently beat Union twice in a row at a March 22 doubleheader and St. Olaf on March 23. In their most recent games, a doubleheader vs. Ithaca on April 3, they lost both games by scores of 7-6 and 10-3. Timothy Connor has had a .395 batting average with 15 hits, two of which were home runs, and six RBIs for the Saints, while Brett Federico has had a .306 batting average with 11 hits and three RBIs. 

The Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams both had their first meets of the season last Saturday on April 1 at the Saints Broken Open. Both teams won the meet, which featured St. Lawrence, Plattsburgh, Herkimer, Potsdam, Mohawk Valley, and Clarkson, with the men’s team winning with a score of 290 points and the women’s team winning with a score of 281 points. For the men’s team, Timmy Boyce won the 800m, Mike Skutt won the 1500m, Erik Geier won the 110m hurdles, Colin Young won the 3000m steeplechase, Zach Jaworski won the shot put, and Jack Simack won the javelin throw. For the women’s team, Hayley Castagnier won the 100m, Alexa Smith won the 400m, Emma Palumbo won the 5000m, Olivia Middleton won the long jump, Caroline Hines won the triple jump, Halla Chappell won the pole vault, and Brooke Martindale won the javelin throw.
