SLU Sports Recap: Saints Look to Continue Victory into Week 6

With fall athletics entering their sixth week of competition this weekend, many teams are looking for victories in order to clinch a spot in the playoffs. Here is a recap of their results from last week:  

Women’s Volleyball fell to Clarkson on the road on Friday in three sets. They were able to rebound in their Tuesday night match against division two Saint Michael’s in a sweep. Senior Annika Kreppein led the team with eleven kills and first-year Rachel Boudreau tallied six blocks. The saints face Vassar and Bard at home this weekend for more Liberty League matchups.  

The Men’s Tennis team competed in ITA Northeast Regionals at Hobart College in Geneva, New York. According to the Saints Athletics press release, Junior Nathan Turtledove won in singles and in doubles.  

Women’s Soccer lost to Ithaca College on Saturday at Sandy Macallister Field, and had another loss Tuesday night against Clarkson. Junior Tyler Potter had one goal for the Saints against Clarkson.  

Men’s Soccer also had a loss to Ithaca on Saturday, with a score of 0-2. Junior Goalkeeper Ben Woelfinger had four saves for the Saints.  

In the Liberty League Fall Preview, the men’s golf team placed fifth out of seven teams. Senior William Wilson shot a 78 to lead the saints and to tie for 16th overall in the tournament.  

Field Hockey recorded two wins this week, with victories over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Saturday and Oswego State on Tuesday night. Senior Mary Clark and Junior Jenny L’Hommedieu had goals for the saints against RPI and Senior Marlee Paterson and Junior McKenzie Haberl each had a goal against Oswego.  

Senior Captain Marlee Paterson said both games were strong wins for them.  

 “Saturday, we came out with our first Liberty League win against RPI,” she said. “That game was followed by our hard-working performance against Oswego State where we played a clean defense and shut them out, winning 2-0.”  

Women’s Cross Country placed fifth out of 29 teams at the Mike Wood’s Geneseo Invitational this past weekend. According to the post-race press release, first-year Alli Sibold finished eighth out of just over 300 runners. The women’s team is currently ranked 30th nationally.  

In the same invitational, the Men’s Cross-Country team placed sixth out of 33 teams this weekend. First-year Timothy Boyce had a personal best during his eight-kilometer race with a time of 25 minutes and 12 seconds. He placed 12th overall out of nearly 400 runners.  

The Men’s and Women’s Hockey teams have also started their division one seasons this past week. The Men won 3-0 in an exhibition game against Clarkson on Saturday. The Women’s Hockey team played Syracuse this weekend and won 4-1 on Friday and Tied 2-2 on Saturday. The Women’s team plays Clarkson this weekend.
