Creating a Lasting Team Culture: Saints Women’s Tennis

1

The St. Lawrence University Women’s Tennis team’s fall season is underway and off to a strong start. The team includes nine young women, hailing as far west as Texas and as far east as Maine. Although the team is young, with half of its members being first-years, the women have shown solid talent in the two weekends of fall match play.

Co-Captains Haley Sherrard and Maddie Nasch have made it the team’s goal to foster meaningful and supportive relationships among team members. Whether that’s convening at a player’s house for a post-dinner bonfire, or spending late nights in the library together, the team finds ways to cultivate worthwhile friendships on and off the court.

The Mary Hosking Invitational Tournament hosted by Hobart and Williams Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY proved to be a great showing for the Saints with many players finishing in the finals of several flights across all levels. Sherrard won the “D” flight singles and Nasch won the “C” flight singles consolation. With regard to main draw “B” and “C” singles flights, both Katherine Apt and Gabby Dadoly played in the semi-finals of their respective flights but ultimately fell to opponents from Rochester to end their runs.

This past weekend, the SLU Invitational Tournament hosted by St. Lawrence University at the Sammis Tennis Courts demonstrated the Saints’ abilities to persevere yet again into final rounds of competition as three out of four doubles pairings made it into the finals of doubles play. It was the senior and first-year duo of Sherrard and Emily Harris who ultimately claimed the “B” flight title after defeating teammates Nasch and Gabby Dadoly in the finals.

Looking ahead, the women will be competing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, ITA, Tournament in Geneva, NY this weekend. They will be sending their top six players to play other top players in the Liberty League Conference. The following weekend the women will be hosting their first team match of the season against Oneonta College at the Sammis Tennis Courts.
