How to get Athletically Involved at St. Lawrence

0

Maintaining an active lifestyle here at St. Lawrence is very important to many of the students here. With a long winter coming, and not much fall left in Canton, making sure you have the right workout or sport routine is essential for getting through the winter. Most of campus is involved in a varsity sport, as St. Lawrence has a very high number of student athletes. But not to worry if you are not one, there are plenty of teams, activities and places to go to keep you active.

Our gym is a great place to start. Located in the Newell Field-house within the Augsbury Fitness Center, it is very close by and easy to get to. Students here enjoy going there often and it is a great resource to have on campus. Although not everyone likes to get their fix by going to the gym, it is a great way to blow off steam after a long day or week. Some students find that working out keeps their mind balanced and free of any stress.

As Canton provides warmer days in early fall, people enjoy going outside for a run or a hike in the Adirondacks. Running is an incredibly efficient way to blow off steam and take time away from work and school. There is a great trail near Jencks and Huelett Hall called Saddlemire Trail that loops around the golf course and is near the horse farm. It is perfect for runners looking for a long trail right on our campus. As for hiking, trips where you can get involved with friends or to meet new people. Although there is the outing club, anyone is welcome to hike the Adirondack peaks and is a popular activity for students here at St. Lawrence.

If you are the type of athlete that misses the intensity of sport but does not want to join at the varsity level, then club sports is definitely the spot for you. There are many teams on campus that students can join from Club Soccer to Club Lacrosse. All skill levels are welcome and encouraged by team Captains. In addition, most club teams play in actual competition versus schools like Clarkson and University of Vermont.

Intramural sports are another way to get involved with playing a sport. There are all different kinds of intramural sports from outdoor soccer and flag football in the fall to broomball in the winter. They are incredibly fun and they are another great way to blow off steam here on campus. Usually occurring only once a week to play games, it is not a big commitment, but well worth signing up for.

There is surely something missing from this list, but it is needless to say that St. Lawrence is home to a variety of options for getting a sweat on.
