Women’s Hockey Defeats Yale and Brown

0

Coming off a tough weekend, the St. Lawrence women’s hockey team got back to their winning ways by beating both the Yale Bulldogs and the Brown Bears.

After a scoreless first period, Hannah Miller ’18 put the Saints on the board first just 32 seconds into the second frame. She took a pass from line mate Kennedy Marchment, which put Miller on a partial breakaway. Miller took a wrist shot that snuck under Yale goaltender Gianna Meloni’s left armpit. Soon after the Saints were awarded a power play when Bulldog’s Jordan Chancellor took a hooking penalty. Just 29 seconds into the power play junior forward Justine Reyes right inside the slot to put the Saints up 2-0.

The Saints sustained pressure continued as they continued to pepper Meloni. Miller got her second of the night three minutes after Reyes’s goal when she shot inside the left faceoff dot. The puck hit the bottom of the crossbar and shot straight down into the net. Meloni was then pulled and replaced by Tera Hoffmann. Hoffmann did not get a chance to get game ready due to the Saints continued pressure. First Year Charlea Pederson scored the Saints final goal 5:04 into the second off a double deflection. Lydia Grauer ’19 took a shot from the left point toward net. Maggie McLaughlin ’20 deflected the shot and it skidded to Pedreson’s stick, which sat on the ice by the left post, and she tapped it in for her first career goal.

Yale got one goal late in the second and early in third, but goaltender Grace Harrison ’19 and the Saints defense stood tall against the Bulldogs’ attack and came away with a 4-2 victory.

The Saints followed up Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 victory against the Brown Bears. After yet another scoreless first period, Miller and Marchment continued their scoring ways from the night before with a goal apiece to put the Saints up 2-0. Without registering a single shot on goal in the first period, the Bears got a goal 45 seconds to go in the second frame on the power play. Whatever momentum the Bears had coming into the final period of the game was squashed just 45 seconds in. Miller put in a rebound off of Nadine Edney’s ’19 initial shot for her second of the night and fourth of the weekend. Dakota Golde ’20 capped off the scoring for the Saints, putting in two of her own to help the Saints win 5-1. Sonjia Shelly ’19 made the start in net and ended with 17 saves, including 11 in the third period. The Saints travel to Quinnipiac and Princeton to try and stay at No. 3 in the ECAC standings.
