Support for Flooding in Pakistan

0

Rivers spilling their banks, severe flash floods, and glacial lake outbursts; Pakistan is facing catastrophic flooding with at least one-third of the country underwater. Scientists determined climate change has exacerbated this disaster, which has displaced over 33 million people and killed more than 1,200. Climate change has increased the rate of glacial melt and subsequent formation of unstable glacial lakes, which raises the frequency and intensity of outburst floods. Climate change also intensified the seasonal monsoon rains, which when coupled with glacial melt, helped catastrophic flash floods inundate the mountainous and steppe regions of Pakistan. Tens of thousands of people fled their homes to escape the floodwaters.

Gilgit Balistan, an autonomous region in north Pakistan, is particularly vulnerable because it lacks government support, is underrepresented in the media, and has an insufficient supply of food, water, and shelter. Gilgit Baltistan is one of the most remote regions of the country, with no access to proper internet, which is why it receives no media coverage. The floods have rendered 350 families homeless across Gilgit Baltistan. Temporary camps need to be built in the area with the provision of relief items, food, blankets, and sanitary pads. Alongside houses, the flash floods have destroyed roads, communication and electrical infrastructure, and agricultural land. Locals have been stranded in many areas of Ghizer and other districts of Gilgit Baltistan due to suspension of electricity, telephone, and road connectivity.

The situation calls for urgent humanitarian aid. The organization “Their Blood” is responding to this disaster, raising funds to provide Gilgit Balistan with basic necessities. “Their Blood” aims to directly reach out to the impacted families and help them with food, basic medication, and menstrual hygiene products. Two members of the team live on site and are in direct contact with the victims.

You too can help Pakistan battle the wrath of climate change. Share their story and donate if you are able.
