St. Lawrence University Athletics entered their second weekend of competition last weekend. Many teams recorded several victories towards their overall records, continuing the momentum from last week’s successes.
Starting with the women, Volleyball swept this weekend with four wins for their home opening tournament, The North Country Classic. They started off the weekend with victories over Route 11 rival, SUNY Canton, and SUNY Oswego. During the SUNY Canton match, Senior Captain Natalie Piper broke a 17-year-old team record for match hitting percentage, recording 14 kills on 20 attempts with zero errors, making her percentage .700, according to the post-game press release. Piper also earned Liberty League Performer of the Week Honors.
“Not only did we show our grit but having everyone back after a crazy start to the season really helped us to work together as a team and do some great things this weekend,” Piper said.
Women’s Soccer tied Nazareth on their game on Saturday at Sandy McAllister field. Sophomore goalkeeper Keely Snode made 12 saves during the game. The women’s soccer team is currently ranked 21st from the United Soccer Coaches National Rankings.
Women’s Golf finished 14th on the golf course at Hamilton College this weekend, Mary Grace McCann leading the team again with her scores.
Field Hockey had a thrilling weekend on the road with victories over Lebanon Valley College and Manhattanville College in a tournament at William Smith in Geneva, New York. In both games, the Saints rallied from behind to win. Junior McKenzie Haberl and first-year Ciara Halloran scored consecutively in the last 70 seconds of the game against Lebanon Valley. The saints came back from a two-goal deficit against Manhattanville, with Junior Captain Jenny L’Hommideu scoring one goal in the second period and one goal in the third to help lead the Saints to victory.
Senior Captain Marlee Paterson said it was their team’s first time winning both games in the William Smith tournament in close to 8 years.
“The team showed grit as we battled from behind in both games to come out on top,” she said. “We hope to continue this level of play as we are getting closer to our first Liberty League competition.”
Women’s Cross Country placed second out of fifth at their race at Hamilton College on Saturday. First- year Allison Sibold placed first overall, with a time of 14:49 seconds for the four-kilometer race.
Men’s Tennis opened their season with the St. Lawrence University Fall Classic tournament on Saturday and Sunday. According to their press release, sophomore Adam Heilbronner won “B” flight singles.
Senior Captain Nico Haet said it was a good weekend for their team.
“Each one of the St. Lawrence Players were able to post a win in their respective flights,” he said. “The weekend efforts were highlighted by Edvin Strandberg, who reached the final of the C flight.”
Men’s Soccer was defeated on the road this weekend, with losses to Hartwick College and SUNY Oneonta. Senior Andrew Terhune recorded his first goal of the season against Oneonta.
Men’s Cross Country also placed second at the Hamilton College short course this weekend. Junior Jackson Hamilton won his first collegiate cross-country race, with a pace of 4:58 minutes per mile.
Football had their first home game of the year on Saturday. They beat Norwich University 37-7, their first victory of the season.
Many teams start with Liberty League play next weekend.
