End the Purge

0

What’s up St. Lawrence, boy have I got a tale for you today. Word of mouth, the Security Blotter, and common sense details that a select few have decided to enact the Purge on this very campus.

That’s right people, I’m talking about theft. So far, in the few short weeks that school has been back in session, countless belongings have been lifted from their original places with the owner being none the wiser. We’re talking laptops, skateboards, bikes, even money (in my case $30 worth of tip money).

This is insane, ridiculous, unfortunate, and, funnily enough, Not Cool Dude. Never before has this campus had this big of a problem with theft, let alone with personal belongings. Sure, the odd bike would be stolen and returned in the same week, but this is unprecedented.

Do y’all remember your tour? Something along the lines of “people are so friendly here, and you can just leave your stuff in common areas to save your seats – no problem!” was either said directly or implied. No longer can we be safe leaving our belongings in the Student Center to save our seats before the Pub rush. Instead we must keep everything attended at all times.

Remember when Dana decided that backpacks were too much of an issue and everyone had to leave their stuff in the cubbies? Now, this may not be an issue anymore (at least in my experience) but there are still people leaving their things out front who would not see their belongings going missing.

These are just a few of the problem areas that shouldn’t be as much of an issue as they are being made by whoever is grimy enough to steal from their fellow students. I don’t know about you guys, but I like having the few measly items that I have and would like it a whole lot more if I didn’t have to worry about them going missing at any point in time. This is not just paranoia either, as we see more and more cases of theft with each coming week.

Come on, y’all. This is a small school. Most of us are just out here suffering, trying to get by. Not all of us have the funds to replace bigger items or earnings, so when those things are taken from us, it takes a toll. There is too much to worry about in the daily life of a college student to add worrying about something as miniscule as leaving a bag unoccupied or laptop charging while you go pick up your Pub order.

We need to band together as a student body to prevent these things from happening because honestly, some of us pay too much to go here to be in such a hostile and greedy environment. Keep an eye out, for your own things and the possessions of those around you. Don’t let this petty theft slide, and as always, stay classy, Saints.
