This past week the Singing Sinners and the Singing Saints had their first concert since Covid started. The Singing Sinners are the all-female A Capella group at St. Lawrence University, while the Singing Saints are the all-male A Capella group at St. Lawrence. The Sinners were established in 1952 and have been performing at St. Lawrence since then, while the Saints were established in 1950. The concert was held on Friday December 3rd at Gunnison Memorial Chapel. Many people came to the concert, including Senior Lauren Best. She noted that “everyone was so excited to be there, no matter what happened it was going to be wonderful and hearing all your friends show off all their hobbies and talents, it was really enjoyable.” Everyone who came to the concert was able to enjoy amazing songs.
The concert started with the Sinners singing multiple songs that they have been working on all semester long. There were multiple solos and duets throughout the Sinners performance including a duet with senior Emily Mierek and junior Caroline Ross to the song Devils Backbone by The Civils War. Emily Mierek noted that concert “was nerve-racking but supper exciting to sing with a new group of girls after so long of not performing.” Other songs that were sung throughout the performance were Till it Happens to you by Lady Gaga, Good as Hell by Lizzo, Ocean Eyes by Billie Eilish, and Soak up the Sun by Sheryl Crow. Some of the soloists for the Sinners included junior Grace Wagshul, junior Betsy Chanatry, and senior Patsy Buckley.
After the Sinners ended their section of the concert, the Saints performed multiple songs in which they too had multiple soloists perform. They started with Bright Lights Bigger City/ Magic Pitch Perfect Medley with soloist performances by junior Colby Burrows, senior Zach Simms, and sophomore Drew Maphey. They also sang Drift Away by Mentor Williams with solos from Zach Simms and Drew Maphey and Uptown Girl by Billie Joel with solos from first-year Joey Mocerine and senior Connor Foye.
After they finished this portion, both groups sang Christmas Songs. The Singing Saints started with 12 Days of Christmas/ Africa Medley. Their soloist for this song was Sophomore Jared Beyer. After that the Singing Sinners sang Winter Wonderland by Rod Stewert. The concert ended with the Saints performing St. Lawrence’s Alma Mater.
This concert was well attended, and many friends, family and other visitors were finally able to watch the Singing Sinners and Singing Saints perform again after about two years of not being able to watch them perform.
