Love is in the Air

Why did you come to St. Lawrence University? Some are recruited, some receive a generous financial aid package and others are trying to find a mate. The alumni network can testify how many Laurentians end up marrying their classmates. Fortunately, we have Tinder to bring us all closer together. I have never seen an app more genuine, sincere and profound. For those who have never used a Tinder account, I’ll give you a quick rundown.

You can set up an account (age, gender, preference), and highlight a mini biography that will attract someone’s attention. A special feature on Tinder is to search for a soulmate many miles away from your location. The pictures you select are crucial, as it significantly influences whether someone will swipe left or right on your account. If you have a match, then you’re set. You can start asking them when/where they would like to have the wedding.

Now, this methodology will not work unless they truly are your soulmate. So if you ask about the wedding and never receive a response, then it wasn’t meant to be.

If you’re a freshman or sophomore then you have some time to ask around the community. Maybe you’ll find someone for you at the Ticker. However, if you’re a junior or senior, then you better start moving and asking alumni for suggestions.

One highly effective method is to ask professors for letters of recommendations and endorsements on LinkedIn. One study found that students who listed skills such as caring, funny and smart had a significantly higher success rate on Tinder. Some students view the relationship as an investment, so it pays off to show your work experience.

During this time of hate and divide across the country, we should start promoting this sense of urgency to love one another. We are transitioning into the age of technology, and Tinder is leading the way for us to find new platforms to fall in love. While your parents may have a romantic story of how they met, consider the fact that your Tinder story could be more intimate. Not only did you fall in love the moment your mate appeared on the phone, you even committed yourself to marriage.

We are limiting our potential if we choose not to use Tinder to find our soulmate. Consider the students who would love to be in our position to find love, but still only own a flip phone. April 1 is the best time to start swiping and asking about the wedding, best of luck!
