Housing selection is right around the corner and with the Theme House fair in the Student Center this week, we thought it would be a good idea to get the inside scoop on what it is like to live in a Theme House.  Many of you are familiar with a lot of the houses already so we took the initiative to learn a little more about a potentially lesser-known house, the Hub.  I interviewed Michelle Knuepfer, a sophomore currently living there.  Located at 1 Lincoln Street, the Hub is known to celebrate “nerd culture” making them a unique group to hang out with. There is an even guy-to-girl ratio that wavers from semester to semester. Michelle is new to the house, only living there this year, but she says a majority live there from sophomore to senior year.  The house capacity is twenty-two and they’re currently full but will have a lot of openings in the fall.

A normal week in the house is pretty laid back, where you always find people in the lounge either watching TV or doing homework.  Recently weekends have been filled with Dungeons and Dragons role-play.  When they are not doing homework, it is possible to find at least one person playing video games at any time during day.  According to Michelle, living in the Hub is “a lot of fun.  “We like to call ourselves ‘the classy house,’ there are a lot of eclectic and chill people.”  The Hub also plans a lot of fun, campus wide events that anyone can participate in.  Their most popular is Game Night in the Winston Room, which has everything from dancing to Super Smash Bros Brawl.  Game Night will be held this March so be on the lookout. Also coming this spring is the Humans vs. Zombies event, which is “a crazy, weeklong, campus wide game of tag!”  The exact date of this event is not yet known because they are waiting until it gets warmer outside.

If you’re interested in learning more about living at the Hub next year, their application is out and they will have plenty of room.  When I asked if they had any funny questions on their application, the immediate response was “all of them!”  After reading over the application I found this was true.  For example, the first question is “if you were stranded on an island, what three items would you bring, other than food, water, and Matthew McConaughey?”  The application is due back to the Hub by March 1st if you’re interested, with an interview to follow.  Furthermore, if you’re interested in joining the club part of the Hub rather than join the house, there are weekly meetings held every Sunday night at 7 pm, open to all!
