After nearly four years away from the music scene, Hozier released his four-track EP “Nina Cried Power” on September 6.

Expectations for this EP were astronomic, with some fans worrying that this new set of music would never live up to the success and poignancy of his self-entitled first album, “Hozier.” Just minutes after the release of “Nina Cried Power,” listeners began to rave about the beauty and complexity of Hozier’s long-awaited new material. It seemed as if he had another hit on his hands.

The first track on the EP, “Nina Cried Power,” features the American gospel singer, Mavis Staples. She, along with Hozier, give a nod to the Civil Rights Movement by citing artists that spoke out against racial oppression, as well as gave voice to the otherwise voiceless.

The vocals are strong and soulful, a perfect recipe for an opening ballad. Switching gears in the second track, Hozier performs “NFWMB” (No One F*cks With My Baby), a sensual tune that echoes the likes of early Sting. Its slow pacing and ethereal vocals put the listener in a trance-like state, a perfect juxtaposition to the liveliness of the first track.

Next comes “Moment’s Silence (Common Tongue),” a familiar nod to Hozier’s previous album. The bass and guitar licks create a groove that one can dance to, and its chorus can be sung along to in shouting fashion.

The final track, however, is perhaps Hozier’s magnum opus. Recalling his Irish roots, “Shrike” employs the lilting grace notes and steady drums of traditional Celtic songs.

He mixes quiet intensity with a sheer outpouring of emotion, creating a narrative of love that outlasts the mistakes made. Ending with this song is a statement of artistic prowess, reminding the listener that although his break was long, it was well worth the wait.
