Feminist Fridays: Be Open to Change

0

Selam, my name is Abigail Yosef. I am an Ethiopian from D.C and a first-year here at SLU. I am also the Public Relations Manager at an organization on campus called Carefree Black Girls (CFBG). CFBG is a safe space for women of color and allies at SLU with the purpose of promoting a sense of unity while empowering each other and confronting issues of diversity on campus.

If you know me, I may claim that I am not a first-year and often joke around about the fact that I live in the Bronx–however, I have always been very proud of my identity. I am a smart, strong, independent black woman of God. While I’ve been here at SLU, I have faced challenges. Several of my beliefs have been challenged, but I can honestly say the result has only strengthened them even more.

In these four short weeks, I can say I have changed. Often times we hear about how people change so much when they get to college and that usually carries a negative connotation.

I disagree! I’ve realized that in these next four years, change will happen and I need to be open to it and allow space for it.

I’m learning that while I am going to try and learn new things, I just need to make sure I am staying true to myself and make sure I am comfortable with my decisions.

I never really listened to Afrobeats or took basketball seriously before I got to SLU, but if you catch me on campus with headphones on, I’m probably cranking to Davido, and if I’m walking back to my dorm in Nike socks, I just came back from a pickup game.

I’ve been able to find solidarity by pushing out of my comfort zone. Whether it be going to African Student Union meetings, or just hanging around the student center, I’ve been able to meet a lot of people. I have also been able to control my time and make myself a priority. Things like devotionals and self care are things I make a priority in my life.

I’ve learned things like my study habits and also not to push myself too hard. Do not drink two double shot espressos and sleep for three hours just because you’re freaking out about your first college exam! Trust me, it’s not worth it.

Someone told me that you have to be honest with yourself with where you are to know where you want to be. Stress and failure are inevitable, but how we handle it is completely up to us.

While I’m no expert and cannot be teaching College 101 due to my lack of experience for the time being, I’ve had my fair share so far.

Challenge yourself, make mistakes, then learn from them and most importantly, have fun. Your gratitude determines your attitude, so keep reminding yourself that there is purpose in this season of your life and you will have a great college experience.

Ciao!
