Annual NUN Sled Race Is Here
Nature Up North is hosting a day of sledding fun at the SUNY Canton sledding hill!
Mark your calendars for this Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024. The original date was Saturday, Feb. 10th, but due to the uncooperative weather it has been postponed to the 24. This will give you plenty of extra time to build your sleds.
The event will take place, as always, at the SUNY Canton sledding hill.
The hill is conveniently located between Kennedy Hall and the foot bridges on the southeast side of the SUNY Canton campus.
Parking is available in Lot 1, accessible via Miller Drive. If you are someone who loves spending time outside and happens to have creative, crafty hands, then please keep reading!
The race will be divided into four divisions: One for youth, 12 and under, 13 and up, Family, and finally, a division for college students.
Nature Up North is thrilled to announce the return of the much-anticipated Cardboard Sled Race for its sixth consecutive year!
We will be hosting sledding enthusiast’s of all ages for a day full of family fun. Some of you reading this might be seasoned competitors, returning to crush the competition for another year.
Or maybe you are a first-time racer who’s looking to make a name for themselves.
Either way, NUN encourages you to show up and race your amazing cardboard creations!
Sleds will be evaluated based on their overall design and the creative use of materials.
There’s no limit to what participants can create, the only catch is you can only use cardboard, duct tape, recycled plastic bags, paint and glue.
We have had all kinds of crazy sleds over the years, from Mario Karts, to tanks, to X-wing fighters from Star Wars.
“It was a blast last year, and I can’t wait for this one,” said Patrick Chase ’25.
“It’s super rewarding to actually interact with the community and see everyone having fun.”
Chase has been with Nature Up North for two years as a digital media intern and helped coordinate last year’s sled race.
“The idea behind the cardboard is we are trying to promote an environmentally conscious alternative to buying a sled from the store.”
Chase said. “With this, you can use it and have fun, and throw it in the recycling after.”

The event will feature free hot chocolate provided by SUNY Canton, and prizes for the winners of each division.
But most of all, the event will be filled with smiles, laughter and good people.
Spread the word and gather your friends and family, unleash your creativity, and prepare for an unforgettable day of sledding fun at SUNY Canton!
