Winter Predictions

As a St. Lawrence University student, staying warm in the winter is paramount, primarily because we live in the Adirondacks. This region’s frigid temperatures and heavy snowfall can pose significant challenges to maintaining comfort and well-being. According to Spectrum News, New Yorkers should expect “more of a positive NAO to start meteorological winter, but [it will become] more negative by January and February.” The positive North Atlantic Oscillation is a fancy term for a weather pattern in the North Atlantic area. When the NAO is positive, it means there is a big difference in air pressure between the Azores and Iceland. This causes strong winds to blow from west to east, making winters in Europe milder and bringing more storms to the North Atlantic region where we are.

A moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from the skin, followed by a thermal or wool layer for insulation, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer.

Remember to wear warm socks, gloves, a hat and a scarf to protect your extremities from the cold!

It would be best if you also familiarize yourself with the heating systems on campus. The student center has two furnaces, and residence halls do as well. In addition, make sure that the heating system in your dorm room is functioning correctly, and if it breaks, contact the ResLife office as soon as possible. Also, keep windows and doors closed at night to prevent drafts and heat loss from your room unless you are overheating.

Staying warm also involves taking care of your body from the inside. Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty, as dehydration can make you more susceptible to the cold. Also, consume warm and nutritious foods and beverages such as soups and teas. These foods and drinks can give your body the energy it needs to generate heat. In addition to this, they can heat your body because they are hot already.

Keeping warm as a college student at SLU is essential for maintaining health, comfort and focus during winter. By dressing appropriately, utilizing heating systems, insulating living spaces, and caring for your body through hydration and nutrition, you can effectively prepare for the challenges of the cold weather. Remember, staying warm is not just a matter of comfort but also a crucial aspect of overall well-being.

Be sure to stay safe and cozy throughout this upcoming winter season!
