New York Yankees 2023 Season
With such high hopes for the team known as the “Bronx Bombers,” the New York Yankees unfortunately did not perform to early season expectations.
That being said, in recent weeks, the team has called up some new players from their minor league farm system. Most notably being the “Martian,” Jason Dominguez is nicknamed Called up just last Friday, after only playing nine games and 31 at-bats in triple-a, Dominguez crushed a pair of home runs in the Yankees three-game weekend sweep against Houston.
While his star-studded first series points to a very bright future for Dominguez, who is just 20 years old, there are also comparisons being made of Dominguez to other famous Yankee players who followed a similar starting path to Dominguez but unfortunately did not end up so to say, “living up to the hype.”
These include that of Gary Sanchez, Jesus Montero, and goes back to Joba Chamberlain. Each of these players had a bright start to their careers, yet unfortunately, after a few years or so, their spark sort of fizzled out.
Take the case of Montero. Even with such a promising start, after switching teams here or there, Montero’s big league career would unfortunately only last four years. Sanchez, on the other hand, was a spark from the first game he played, and he still is not bad per se; he just has moved on from the Yankees and has since been on the Twins, the Mets and now the Padres.
His future is sort of up in the air as of now, but the idea remains that he is no longer with the Yankees. Whether that meant moving on from the Yankees or ending their big league career entirely it varies from person to person, but at the core of this all, the Yankees have a history of fast-tracking careers of promising rookies, maybe a little bit too much. Time will tell if this continues to be the case.
As of today, the Yankees have a record of 69-69 and are 18 games behind the division-leading Baltimore Orioles. Also, they are currently seven games back of the third American League wild-card spot.
With only 24 games left in the regular season, their chances of making the playoffs are low. They would have to win the vast majority of the rest of their games and also hope some other teams lose. The Yankees were one of the World Series favorites at the start of the season, so the 2023 season has been very disappointing for the Yankees and their fans.
With it being highly unlikely that they will make the playoffs in 2023, it seems like the Yankees will have to wait at least one more year to get World Series number 28.
