This Sunday, former world #1 Andy Murray successfully seized his first ATP world tour title after sustaining a hip injury that required surgery which took place back in January.

The three-time Grand Slam tournament winner came to triumph after overcoming his Swiss opponent, Stan Wawrinka (current world #17), at the European Open which took place in Antwerp, Belgium. In an interview for BBC Sport, Murray expressed “I am certainly a lot more optimistic.”

The Scottish Native claimed victory after losing the first set 3-6 but managed to retaliate in the next two sets, winning 6-4 6-4 to claim his first title since 2017.

After the match, Murray expressed “Stan was playing unbelievable. I just managed to hang in a bit at the end of the second set and the third set was extremely close again.”

“My hip is fine. There’s no pain there anymore, which is amazing. I guess there shouldn’t be because it’s metal – there’s no pain receptors or anything in the metal,” he added.

Nevertheless, player Roger Federer was impressed by Murray’s determination, claiming that “He’s been playing to try and get close to his old level.”

Upon claiming victory, Murray broke down in tears and added, “I don’t know why you get emotional about certain things or the reason for why it comes. Everyone is different.”

Murray has managed to entertain and inspire various generations through his humility and game style that earned him an ATP World Tour Finals title in 2016. Furthermore, Murray is preparing for next month’s Davis Cup teams event, which will be taking place in Madrid. He is looking forward to being  fully back on the ATP World Tour after two years of absence that caused his world ranking to drop significantly.

Andy Murray will be on a task to break the top ten again. So, better keep an eye on that forehand drop shot!
